What is MSME / Udyam Registration?
MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) registration, now formally called Udyam Registration, is the official government registration for businesses under the MSMED Act, 2006. Administered through the Udyam Registration Portal (udyamregistration.gov.in), this registration gives businesses a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) and certificate.
The registration is entirely free of government charges and can be completed online using just Aadhaar and PAN. Unlike earlier MSME registrations, Udyam Registration is self-declared and does not require physical documentation uploads. The data is auto-verified with PAN and GST databases.
MSME registration unlocks a comprehensive suite of government benefits — from priority sector lending and collateral-free loans under CGTMSE, to government procurement preferences and protection against delayed payments. For any growing Indian business, Udyam Registration is a foundational step.
